The Charcoal Life series images – Fretting, Fractured, Angst, Numb and Small Window Of Hope – are inspired by the Archie Roach song “Took the children away” and is a series of images leading the observer through an emotionally charged experience of losing a loved one suddenly through forced removal.
The Charcoal Life series of paintings are an all-encompassing illustration of the indigenous experience of their Charcoal Life and shows different distressing moments within this experience and within their continuing ‘charcoal’ existence.
While the images refer to the Stolen Generation, they have relevance to all peoples across the globe who have had this experience of loss, be it through war or government policies separating families like the removal of babies and children from underage/unwed mothers to be placed into orphanages for adoption or the forced assimilation of indigenous peoples.
These images are both passionate and poignant, powerfully imparting this knowledge of loss to the observer.
The Charcoal Life series exhibition will be held at the Redfern Community Centre in Sydney on 2 August 2016 – 18 September 2016. Details of the exhibition are available at http://jemimawhitford.com/event/charcoal-life/.
