Creativity is a personal process and, for me, it has been a journey.
I have always wanted to paint and create, and hairdressing stimulated and satisfied these for me. It has been a great vehicle for visions of colour and shape and, ironically, construction. Really, hairdressing is sculpting in a fluid medium and, along with hard work, has been a lot of fun. You can visualise all different styles and looks on your clients. It’s a gift and a skill which has enabled me to mentally visualise images which I am often compelled to paint.
Creating brings me peace through the whole process from the image inception through the process of preparation, the act of creation and the finish. This process can take a long time, sometimes a very long time – to this day I am yet to paint images which I originally conceived in high school! It excites me that I will be able to create them all eventually.
After I finish a series of paintings – the mental images finally transformed into physical images – I feel a weight lifted off my mind. Finally releasing them to the world ….. it makes it all worthwhile, all the time spent to produce them. Some of these images are whimsical, some have ideological intensity. I hope people find beauty in all of them.
The Charcoal Life series that’s scheduled for exhibition in August revolves around a serious subject. The series was not conceived as a judgmental piece. Rather, it offers an emotional journey for those who, happily, have no direct experience of the events involved to feel the pain of the said experience. It is a series of fear, pain, anger, depression and finally (hopefully) some healing; it is an experience which needs to be had to really give understanding of others’ pain.
The Bundjalung Dreaming series is a stunning visual series to be exhibited soon. It explores the beautiful Bundjalung people: their care of other mobs and the touching of spirit on all through dance and life.
I am a fusional and contemporary artist, frequently taking traditional symbols and placing these into a modern contemporary style.
